day 71 - roppongi christmas lights

Hey everyone!
Hope you have all been well.

On the 21st of November Amy, Zoe and I went off to Roppongi to see our first Christmas Illumination.

During the Christmas period (which seems to be as soon as Halloween is over, up until Christmas day in Japan) illuminations are put up around different areas of Tokyo. The illuminations are taken pretty seriously and can be quite spectacular.
Japan's Christmas illuminations range from decorated Christmas trees to statues and lights and often involve a combination of them all.

As I have probably mentioned previously, Christmas in Japan is very much considered a couple's affair, and the illuminations are no exception. So unsurprisingly there were plenty of loved up couples out on romantic dates.

While we were on our way to the light show, the main attraction of Roppongi's illuminations we were able to check out Roppongi Hills' famous spider sculpture, Maman by Louise Bourgeoise.
Although pretty creepy, I actually really liked this statue somehow. If you stand underneath the statue and look up you can see it's egg sack which is actually filled which big white marble eggs. I can almost feel you shudder!

Cute heart illumination - perfect photo spot for couples!

As you can see there were so many different parts to Roppongi's illuminations, and it was spread across the area. But the main attraction to the illumination was the light show.

The light show was amazing. The lights changed from red to blue with lights that looked as if they were flying through the air like fairies. The show lasted a few minutes and was on a continuous loop. It must have been incredibly expensive to set up and keep running so it was no wonder that this part of the illuminations had a sponsor!

Naturally it wouldn't be a complete blog post without a food picture!

We stopped by a tempura restaurant for a quick meal. It was very much a fast-food affair so apart from us, the clientele seemed to consist entirely of businessmen.
I ordered a soba noodle and tendon set. while it may not have been Michelin star fare, it certainly hit the spot!

On our way back we happened upon "Santa Street" which had lots of cute Santa statues. Each statue had it's own theme and served as a photo opportunity.

We had a great time viewing the illuminations. They were all so pretty, the light show was impressive and we had a lot of fun with the Santa statues.
If you are ever in Japan around the Christmas season I really recommend checking some of Tokyo's illuminations out!

Well that's all for now!
Sorry for the delay in posts but I will strive to get them out more regularly again!
'Till next time!
